Domotics (from the Latin word "domus", house), is the encounter of information technology, electrotechnics and electronics that makes a home become "smart".

It's the tool that allows us to control systems, devices and automations with the aim of increasing the living and comfort quality of the domestic space, but not only. A building starts to develop its "own intelligence", characterized, not by the amount of high technology it contains, but by the way the technology integration is projected and by how these technologies are able to satisfy the constantly evolving individual’s needs. The word domotic is now part of the Italian vocabulary as "Science that concerns electronics and information application to domestic life (household appliances and control systems) and that concerns the use of the appliances".

What is it used for?

Every building has routine processes where we can observe repetitive habits or similar situations that may be easily automatized. Some daily examples are: turning the lights on to illuminate dark stairs and turning them off when nobody is around. It may also mean turning the lights on and off even when there is nobody at home, to simulate occupation, or automatically turning down air conditioning systems when the external temperature drops, controlling cameras and security devices, etc.

Domotics, is an integrated system for homes that provides the final user with new comfort and a standard of security that cannot be achieved by the adoption of traditional systems or partial automations.

Technology as natural evolution

Proportionally to the innovation level, for its nature the human being tends to approach the renovation events with skepticism. The human being attitude towards what he perceives has unknown is hesitating, and he seeks refuge in his traditions and therefore in his certainties. This attitude seems to become even more evident particularly inside the domestic environment, the place where private life and family love feelings grow. For example, in 1881 in London, the opening ceremony night of the first building in the world to be lightened by electricity, the Savoy Theatre, was deserted as a form of prevention against that sort of “diabolic” glow. This demostrates that the technical progress isn’t enough to make usable something that is innovative and useful. It needs the development of historical - social circumstances and ideological movements in order to orient the several scientific applications – from which other sectors already take advantages – towards the places dedicated to the domestic life.
